Read the Gurgle: 4 Questions That Narrow It Down
Two minutes of listening tells us (and you) most of the story.
Does it gurgle only after you use that fixture?A sink that gurgles as it finishes draining points at that drain or its vent. Contained problem, easy fix.

Does one fixture gurgle when a DIFFERENT one runs?Toilet gurgles when the shower drains, or a tub gurgles when the washer empties: those fixtures share a line, and the shared line is struggling. This is the one to pay attention to.

Is it the lowest toilet or drain in the house? The lowest fixture gurgles first when the main sewer line is narrowing. Gurgle plus slow drains downstairs is the main line announcing itself.

Any sewer smell with it?Gurgling can siphon the water out of a trap, and an empty trap lets sewer gas in. Smell plus gurgle means the problem has been building for a while.
Gurgling at the lowest fixtures plus slow drains plus smell: stop running water and call. That combination is the pre-backup pattern.
Why Do Drains Gurgle?
Drains gurgle when air is being pulled through water instead of flowing freely through the pipe. A healthy drain system moves air through vent pipes that run up through your roof, so water falls smoothly down the drain. When a vent is blocked or a pipe is partially clogged, draining water has to yank its air through the nearest water seal instead, usually a P-trap or the toilet bowl. That bubbling is the sound you hear.

So a gurgle is never random noise. It means air is taking a path it shouldn't, and the cause is one of a short list of suspects.

What Causes a Gurgling Drain or Toilet?
Ranked by how often we find each one:
Most often: a clog forming
A partial blockage leaves water pulling air past it as it drains. The gurgle usually shows up weeks before the drain fully stops.
The warning case: main line narrowing
Roots, grease, or a sag choking the main sewer line. The tell: multiple fixtures gurgle, lowest ones first, often with slow drains.
Common: a blocked vent stack
Leaves, bird nests, and in Ohio winters, frost sealing the roof vent. Drains gurgle with completely clear pipe because the system can't breathe.
Septic homes: the tank or field
A full tank or saturated leach field backs air up into the house lines. House-wide gurgling on a septic home points outside, not at your pipes.
One Gurgling Fixture or Several?
One fixture, gurgles after its own use
That drain or its vent. A cleaning visit sorts the clog case; a vent check sorts the rest. If the same drain is also slow or keeps clogging, the causes overlap:
Several fixtures, or it gurgles when something else runs
Shared line or main line. That's a countdown, not a quirk, and it's worth a camera before it becomes a backup.
The cause most companies never check: the vent
Plenty of gurgling drains get cabled twice and jetted once before anyone looks up. If the pipe is clear and the gurgle stays, the vent stack is the suspect, and around here that means leaves in fall, nests in spring, and frost capping the roof vent in a January cold snap. A cable can't fix a vent.

We diagnose the whole airway: drain, line, and vent, plus the septic side on rural homes. You get the actual cause and one honest fix, not a repeat-visit subscription to the same symptom.
