What the Service Line Does — and Why It Fails

The service line is the underground pipe that runs from your well casing to your home's pressure tank and plumbing system. It carries every drop of water your household uses. Because it's buried — typically several feet underground to protect it from freezing — it's largely invisible until something goes wrong.

Service line materials have varied over the decades. Repair vs. Full Line Replacement

Whether we repair the damaged section or replace the full line depends on what we find and the line's overall condition. Here's how we think about it:

Spot repair — when it makes sense

A localized break or joint failure on a line that's otherwise in good condition — modern HDPE, copper, etc., properly installed, not near end of service life — is a reasonable candidate for spot repair. We expose the damaged section, repair or replace it, and restore the line.

Full replacement — when it's the right call

Older galvanized or polybutylene lines, lines showing widespread degradation, or situations where the fault location can't be isolated to a single area usually call for full replacement. Repairing one section of a failing line often means digging again in 2–3 years. Full replacement with modern HDPE gives you a line that should last 40–50 years.

Age matters here the same way it does with pumps. A pinhole in a 5-year-old HDPE line is a spot repair. The same fault in a 30-year-old galvanized line is usually the starting point of a pattern — and full replacement is the more honest recommendation.
