Why Water Lines Fail in the Dayton Area
Dayton's housing stock and soil work against buried lines. Homes built before the 1970s often still run their original galvanized steel service lines, which corrode from the inside until flow chokes off and pinhole leaks start. Ohio's clay-heavy soil swells and shifts with freeze-thaw cycles, stressing joints and cracking rigid pipe. Tree roots don't enter pressurized water lines the way they invade sewers, but they crush and shift shallow lines as they grow.
